Prison officers appear to have foiled an attempt to bring contraband into the gaol.

Staff noticed a man allegedly throwing prohibited items into the prison yesterday and provided a detailed description to police.

A man fitting the description was then seen at Westside Plaza and apprehended at McDonald’s restaurant around 3pm.

McDonald’s manager Mark Craven said no customers were in danger during the incident, and praised the conduct of his staff.

“My staff were helpful with police and acted appropriately and professionally,” said Mr Craven.

The man’s flight from the gaol to the plaza led some to assume that he was an escaped prisoner, however police said that this was not the case.

The man is believed to be in his 20s and was being held in custody late yesterday as police enquiries continued.
