Rehab for drunk driver

Wednesday, 10th December, 2014

A drunk driver brought himself to the attention of police by cutting them off at a corner, the Local Court was told yesterday.

The 56-year-old failed to give way when he emerged from Newton Lane, near the Burke Ward School, about 4pm on November 14.

Police did a u-turn and followed his car as it turned into Newton Street and pulled into a driveway of a house.

The officers got out and asked Stephen Lee Newman if that was his house and he replied that it was not.

They said they noted that he had staggered slightly as he emerged from his vehicle so they did a breath test on him which returned a reading of 0.166.

Newman was charged with high-range drink-driving and in court yesterday it was revealed that he had been given an eight-month suspended sentence three years ago for a mid-range offence.

Magistrate Geoff Dunlevy granted him leave to undergo an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program and ordered him to return to court for sentence on January 20.
