Tibooburra enjoys late Christmas gift
Tuesday, 30th December, 2014
Tibooburra received a late Christmas surprise over the weekend.
The township received a good drop of rain and the owner of the Family Hotel, Melissa Thomson, said everyone was delighted.
“We looked out and it was raining. There was one little fellow flat-out riding a bike in the rain,” she said.
“The rainfall varied around the area. I think we received about 15 millilitres and other areas received more.
“It was a good soaking, it went on and off all Saturday.”
Melissa said it also brought the temperature down.
“We went into work with shorts on and by the end of the day we had shirts and jeans on - it became quite cold.
“It was forecast to rain but we didn’t think we would see any. It was beautiful, it was a surprise, a belated Christmas present.”
Melissa’s daughter Naomi was in Tibooburra to celebrate Christmas with her parents and said it was a nice change.
“I jokingly said that I brought the rain with me from Darwin,” she said.
“It was a nice drop of rain - it cooled down the place for New Year’s.
“At this stage we aren’t expecting any more rain.”
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said the town and district got about 20 millilitres but that there was no more rain on the radar.
“It will be hot again by Thursday and Friday with temperatures reaching 40 degrees,” he said.
There will be no rain in Broken Hill, either.
“There is no rain for the western parts of the region,” the spokesman said.
“Broken Hill is expected to be 39 to 41 degrees by Thursday and Friday.”
