Burke Ward Swimming Carnival
Wednesday, 17th February, 2010
Burke Ward students were treated to perfect weather yesterday as they hit the pool for the school's annual swimming carnival.
Members of the school's four houses - Stuart, Flinders, Poole, and Gipps - started the day with war cries before taking part in a series of competitive and novelty races. Competition in the water was spirited, with a number of students setting impressive times and breaking long-standing school records. Carnival organiser Sarah Jardine said the event had gone smoothly, with all kids getting into the spirit of the carnival. "We've got most of our primary kids here, we've got really good attendance and all the kids are having a great time," she said. "You can't keep them out of the pool with all the races and novelty events. "We've also had great weather which always helps, and a good roll-up of parents helping out." The carnival was won by Flinders on 390 points, followed by Stuart (335), Gipps (293) and Poole (252).
Record breakers for the day were: Lachlan Grose, six records - Boys all age 200m medley, boys all age 100m freestyle, 12yrs 50m freestyle, 12/13 yrs breaststroke, 12/13 yrs backstroke, and 12/13 yrs butterfly. Jessica Thomas, three records - Girls all age 100m freestyle, girls 12/13yrs backstroke and girls 12/13 yrs 50m butterfly. Bailey D'Monte - Boys 11yrs 50m freestyle record. Leighton King - Boys 13yrs 50m freestyle record. Indianna Paull - girls 11yrs 50m breaststroke record. Poole house now holds the record for the junior boys relay.
