A combined men’s softball team appears set to make history this weekend at the South Australian Softball Association Championships.
Team officials said the competition in Adelaide would mark the first time a men’s softball team had represented Broken Hill interstate.
The local team is drawn from the men’s softball competition which started in October last year.
A few of the players are former baseballers, but many have been recruited from other sporting backgrounds such as soccer, cricket and Aussie Rules.
The men will be required to quickly overcome the learning curve of switching codes, as they will face stiff competition from three other teams drawn from dedicated men’s leagues around various SA zones.
“It’s going to be a hard competition. The other teams play all year round,” said team manager Jaimee Day.
“But they’ve been going really well. Considering they only started four months ago, they’ve been brilliant.
“They’ve been training hard twice a week, and they’ve adapted really well.
“They’ll just go down there for the experience and see what it’s all about.”
The team is sponsored by Swick Mining Services, and will represent the city in navy blue and gold uniforms with a grey trim.
