Nurses program a resounding success

A program to combat a nursing shortage in the city has been a resounding success.

In March last year a Memorandum of Understanding was developed between TAFE Western, the Far Western Local Health District and Southern Cross Care.

It followed the decision by NSW Health to stop training enrolled nurses and to develop an opportunity for graduates to get into Enrolled Nursing at a diploma level.

Donna Scotti, from FTT Nursing and Health, said the program was run from July 2013 to December 2014.

“The program consisted of four four-week blocks at TAFE in Broken Hill for five days a week over the 18 months,” Ms Scotti said.

“This was for theory and skill development at a Diploma level.

“After each of these blocks of theory the learners performed work placement in acute hospitals; Broken Hill Hospital, Southern Cross Care Broken Hill, Wilcannia and even Bloomfield Hospital Orange.”

Ms Scotti said in between theory and compulsory work placements, all learners continued to be employed in their usual jobs.

“The learners completed 26 units to complete the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing which was an enormous achievement for their professional development,” she said.

“The partnership between TAFE, Southern Cross Care and Broken Hill Hospital was an excellent and most satisfying venture.

“We would like to thank everyone for all their support.

“The students were a wonderful group, motivated and professional throughout. They all have succeeded well and have exceeded their own expectations of what they were capable of.

“There were 11 enrollments.”

There are plans to run the program again but under a different model, Ms Scotti said.

“We have been given two NSW Health Scholarships positions to offer and we will offer other learners the course under VET FEE HELP (a bit like HECS).

“We are planning to have an information session before our planned commencement in May 2015.

“We already have quite a waiting list at Broken Hill TAFE, so all those potential learners will be contacted to apply very soon.:

Enrolments for all courses at TAFE Western are now open.
