Local residents have double the reason to feel proud this Australia Day, says Mayor Wincen Cuy.

Monday’s public holiday comes less than a week after Broken Hill was unveiled as the nation’s first heritage city.

Mayor Wincen Cuy said this year’s Australia Day was extra special given the new status and encouraged all residents to get behind the official events.

“I encourage everyone to come to the Australia Day ceremony,” Mr Cuy said.

“Especially this one, due to the Heritage Listing.

“It is like our own Australia Day award to Broken Hill.

“Our acknowledgement of the award will highlight how proud we are to be Broken Hill people.

“And growing up in Broken Hill makes us proud to be Australian.”

Australia Day festivities will be in full swing on Monday morning with the official ceremony beginning at the Civic Centre.
