A call is being put out for school children to be involved in the Broken Hill Fringe Festival.
West Darling Arts, in conjunction with the Fringe Festival, is holding an Art Prize competition in which children can paint, draw or photograph anything that shows what a “Festival in the Outback” means to them.
They can then fill out an entry form, stick it to the back and drop it to WDA at the Town Hall Facade.
Aboriginal Arts Development Officer, Kathy Graham, said there were four categories: junior primary, senior primary, secondary and senior secondary.
“We are trying to get all the schools on board,” Ms Graham said.
“Students don’t have to submit work through their school, they can submit it individually.”
Ms Graham said they were looking to ask the shops in Argent Street to display the works.
“We are hoping to have the work displayed in the window,” she said.
“The competition will be judged by the Regional Art Gallery’s, Cathy Farry, who is also the chairman of WDA.”
Ms Graham said if there were any children who wanted to enter but didn’t have any materials there would be a workshop.
“We are holding an open workshop day and the gallery will be providing the materials,” she said.
‘It will be on February 21 from 10am to 1pm.
“The cost is $10 to cover materials. You can leave your work there and it will be submitted, or you can submit it yourself. Make sure you book a place, as spots are limited.”
Ms Graham said everyone was welcome to enter.
“You don’t have to be artistic or doing any artwork - just have a go,” she said.
Entries include 2D works in any medium up to A2 in size. Works can either be framed or mounted on heavy hard board for display.
Entries can be delivered to the office of West Darling before Friday, February 27.
The WDA will also be showcasing local artists with an exhibition in the Town Hall Facade.
“We are hoping to provide a one stop shop where locals can see a whole selection of artists throughout the region.
“We are calling for artists to submit work for that as well.
“The showing will run through the festival.”
There will also be basket weaving workshops on March 10 and 11 at the Regional Art Gallery.
“That will be with Ann Evers and will be a two day workshop - but you can choose to come for one day,” Ms Graham said.
“It is $20 for one day or $30 for both days and that is to cover costs.”
