With the Broken Hill season winding down it only means one thing: big fields, good racing and a magic atmosphere.

Into its fourth season, this Coughlan Cup holds pride of place in the Broken Hill racing calendar.

The visions and values displayed by Dean and Trish Coughlan in enabling the carnival of cups to begin in the Hill is testimony to the loyalty they have to our city.

The first race gets underway at the Rocky Baker Memorial Paceway at 6.54pm, the Rockwell Resources Pace. My top pick is Double Standards (2), the ever consistent little fella will give a bold showing.

The danger horse is Ellehigh (3) who is in great form and will take holding out. Others to keep an eye on are Khaleesi (5) and The Whitney (9), not ideally drawn but very capable.

In Race 2, the Rocky Baker Memorial, top pick goes to Horizon Miss (2), who likes to lead and bowl along. The danger horse is Montana Madge (8), an ever green mare that never disappoints. Others to keep an eye on are Kilbernie North View (6) and Bronze Destiny (7) should appreciate a drop in class.

In Race 3, the Coughlan Drilling Pacing Cup, the field is stacked with quality horses with barrier draws likely to play a part.

Three last start winners in Henley Franco, Dougs Courage and Mcardles Art all have a hope, but they unfortunately got a bad draw.

I’ve settled on the winner to come from the front row from either Youvegotobelieveit (3) or Cityscape (4) both having ring craft on their side and knowing what it takes to win on the tight turning track. The field as mentioned is packed with ability and whatever takes your fancy is worth following as they all have winning chances.

In Race 4, the Carbine Chemicals Pace, Eye Carly (7) is a quality mare with a huge winning chance. The danger horse goes to On Thevillagegreen (1), a handy type when right, while others to keep an eye on are Riverboat Girl (2) and Make Mine Lucky (4).

The Race 5, the Paiwai Shearing Pace, the top pick is Mestari (1), he gets his chance here to win in a not-so-strong field. Atom Ranger (7) will be right in the thick of things with any luck, and others to keep an eye on are Another Archangle (5) and Tianischoice (6), both honest types.

The Race 6 Gomex Drilling Pace, my top pick is Shez From Heaven (8), she will enjoy a sit on a truly run race. The danger horses are King Of Dreams (1) and Our Dartesian (2), both last start winners who will be handy at the bell. Others to look out for are Artois Stone (3) and Kismear (7), both capable of a knock-out blow.

Tonight’s meeting not only promises on track excitement but off track activities as well as face painting, pony rides, $1000 dollars worth of gift vouchers courtesy of Carbine Chemicals, two $100 betting vouchers and a chance to enter the draw for a Toyota Yaris courtesy of Harness Racing New South Wales.

It will also feature $5000 raffle draw, music and entertainment from Blue Ridge and the ever-popular 24 children’s bikes giveaway, a concept adopted by Jensen and Tarsha, the children of the ever popular Rocky Baker.

Other proud race sponsors on tonight’s program are Rockwell Resources and Gomex drilling companies with strong attachment to Coughlan Drilling.

Paiwai Shearing is a new sponsor on board this season, and has a history with harness racing back in New Zealand.
