Search for star players
Saturday, 14th March, 2015
After setting itself an ambitious goal, St Joe’s is looking to bolster player, coaching and administration ranks before the 2015 season starts.
Last year the club won the A and B grade premierships and is this year aiming to make it to the finals in every grade, from under 12s to A.
It will be no easy feat for the double blues, especially for the senior teams which have lost of a number of stars from last season.
But B grade coach Anthony Wellington said that could be a positive.
“It’s a challenge for the other players to step up and also provides opportunities to our young players,” Wellington said.
“We will be searching for our next stars to replace the likes of Mike Sheldon and Barry Schofield.”
However, with trial matches starting soon, Wellington said the club could still do with a few more players to shore-up its top grades.
It will hold a player registration day tomorrow at McDonald’s at 2pm. A second registration day will be held at O’Neill Park on Saturday March 21, which is also the first Saturday of trial matches.
“So if you are interested in playing soccer for St Joe’s please come along to one of our training sessions or please call Frank Napoli on 0400 006 574 for more information,” Wellington said.
He said there were also some committee positions that needed filling, the most important of which was canteen co-ordinator.
“We are also calling for nominations for junior coaching positions.”
Tim Earl remains the club’s president with Mick Dawson vice president. Frank Napoli is secretary and registrar and Tracey Murray is treasurer.
Senior men and Colts squads have been training since February 1 under the watchful eye of George Callegher, who has been appointed A grade coach.
Other appointments include Brett Morris and Nicole Winley (women) and James Morley (Colts).
The soccer association is also looking to start an under 15 all girls competition which would be played on Sunday mornings.
“Although St Joe’s have the most female players of any club we need more under 15s,” said Wellington. The club is looking for girls who turned 13 or 14 on January 1 this year.
Training for juniors (U/6s to U14s) is Thursdays at Norm Fox Oval from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. Senior teams, Colts, Women, A Grade and B Grade train on Thursdays at Picton Oval from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
With the season just around the corner, Wellington said the refurbished soccer grounds were looking a treat.
“Parents and players will get a welcome surprise and will definitely not recognise the pitches.
“Credit must be given to the Association for their vision and the volunteers for co-ordinating and implementing the improvements.”
