Valmai Rae Stephens received a surprise when she opened yesterday’s paper and saw herself pictured in the Outback Archives photo from the city’s past on the letters page.

Mrs Stephens was shown in the first women’s cycling championship ever held in Broken Hill, in 1938.

She was third from the right, next to the man with the striped shirt.

“I found another photo of me, sitting on a bike and it said on the back that I had broken the half mile record in 1938,” Mrs Stephens said.

“That was the South Australian record and I broke it on February 13, 1938.”

Mrs Stephens, whose maiden name was Carnie, said she cycled until she was in her 20s.

Tomorrow she celebrates her 93rd birthday.

“I was very surprised to see that photo,” Mrs Stephens said.
