Former North Football Club young gun Sam Simmons will line up for the Greater Western Sydney reserves side today for the first time.
Simmons has been the co-captain of the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup and has averaged 21 disposals in his seven appearances.
Playing in midfield, Simmons has also managed to sneak up forward and score the occasional goal.
His string of consistent performances has amalgamated to this weekend’s curtain raiser to the GWS Giants/Adelaide Crows match.
Simmons is eager to get out onto Spotless Stadium and make a name for himself.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “I’ve had a bit of good form in the TAC (Cup) and it helps that I’m involved with the GWS Academy.
“Playing in Broken Hill has made me into the player I am today and it’s really great to be selected.”
Simmons will likely find himself in a winger/pocket position for today’s game but may even get a run in midfield.
Team manager Jason Saddington said young Simmons is a welcome inclusion to the side.
“Sam is a mobile player who can play as both a midfielder and key position player,” he said.
“Sam has come through the PM CAPITAL GIANTS Academy in 14s, 15s and 16s and it’s great to see him get his opportunity with the UWS GIANTS in the NEAFL.
“He’s a good competitor, has good hands, reads the play well and chooses good options on the field.
“Hopefully Sam will continue his good form and be in the mix to represent NSW/ACT at the Nationals later in the year.”
Simmons will line alongside former North juniors teammate Lachlan Tiziani.
GWS will take on the Gold Coast at 10.30am.
