The good times and spontaneous entertainment of open mic night are set to return at the Palace Hotel this evening.

The open event was previously a very popular mid-week fixture at the West Darling Hotel, with crowds packing the pub’s dining room to see a variety of amateur performances.

It has now been reborn in the colourful and quirky surrounds of the Palace, providing local musicians, poets, and comedians with a venue to showcase their talents in a relaxed and jovial atmosphere.

Host and musician Rob Lohmann previously ran the event at the West Darling, and said many locals would have fond memories of enjoying a drink and an unpredictable show.

“At the height of the West Darling it was a real highlight, lots of people came along because you just never knew what would pop up on the night,” he said.

“Magic can happen on the spur of the moment, and that’s what it’s all about.”

A few trial open mic nights have been held at the Palace recently, but tonight marks its official return with $50 in prizemoney up for grabs along with vouchers for beer, wine or soft drinks.

The $50 will be awarded to the performer with the best original offering, while a free drink voucher will be handed to anyone who takes the stage.

Performance poet Andrew Spencer said he hoped to see the event emulate or surpass its former glory, and encouraged everyone to come down and participate or simply watch.

“It’s just good to reinvigorate something that was really popular, and hopefully we can get everyone back involved,” he said.

“It’s a very respectful and friendly crowd, there’s no booing or anything - it should be a great night.”

Performances will begin at 9pm in the side bar, and those wishing to perform are encouraged to come down and put their name on the board in the hours beforehand.

Children are more than welcome to perform and watch, however they must be accompanied by an adult.

Open mic night will be held throughout the remainder of the year on the third Wednesday of each month.
