Preschool targeted yet again

Criminals have again targeted the South Community Centre, with the South’s library and preschool trashed.
Playtime Pre-school director and teacher Tess Gilmour said vandals gained entry to the centre by smashing the men’s toilet window sometime between 6pm Monday and 6am yesterday.
They damaged pipes in the toilets, before trashing the foyer and entryway.
They also disabled the CCTV camera, smashed a window to gain access to the library, stole a small amount of cash, and prized open the doors to the preschool’s staff rooms.
Once inside they rummaged through personal belongings and set off the fire extinguisher, and even stole the staff biscuit tin.
Ms Gilmour said although classes weren’t disrupted by the damage, the ongoing attacks on the centre were starting to take their toll.
“This is the fourth time in 12 months that this has happened, and from the first one to now, I’m really frustrated to be honest,” she said.
“We’ve had to call extra staff in and clean up and replace things, and the time that’s spent doing these things and filling out reports I could be teaching the children.
“And the parents are all disgusted. ‘Disgusting’ is the word being most used.
“How could someone do something like this? It shouldn’t be happening, it’s the community’s preschool.”
Despite her frustration, Ms Gilmour said police and council had both been very helpful and offered their full assistance.
She said she would now look to meet with council to discuss ways to improve security around the centre.
“We’ll contact council management to see if they can do something regarding security, because this is just becoming a bit much.
“We’ve got cleaners who come in here after hours, and they need to feel safe too.”
A police investigation into the incident is currently underway.
