Hillaroos camp a great success

Soccer in Broken Hill is alive and exciting. This year has seen the Broken Hill Soccer Association (BHSA) rolling out a number of initiatives.

First there was the Rudolph Alagich Cup held on the June long weekend; the two-day junior development clinic; the Senior Seminary challenge; the Junior Classic; the Summer 7-A-Side and; the Structured Development Program.

After the success of the Soccer Clinic run at the Rudolph Alagich Cup, involving Drago Kljajic in June, the BHSA is proud to have provided Broken Hill junior soccer players with further development opportunities in 2015 by running the BHSA Hillaroos Soccer Camp.

The weekend camp was for juniors between the ages of 5 and 17 and featured guest coach, Chad Bugeja from Adelaide, who bought a wealth of experience and knowledge to the camp.

Chad played in the first year of the A-league for Adelaide United, has coached Premier League club Blue Eagles to a grand final in the men’s competition, played for a number of Adelaide Premier League teams, owns and operates the Step Into Life group fitness franchise in Salisbury and is now Junior Technical Director for Para Hills premier league club.

The weekend training took on a holistic approach to player development and incorporated two group fitness sessions for adults.

Day One of the BHSA Hillaroos camp:

The camp started at 9am with registration and breakfast and training began at 10. Our Broken Hill junior soccer talent were exposed to first class coaching from Mr Bugeja, and technical skill development and tips from Pele himself! Thanks to Clare Williams for providing specialist athletics coaching with the senior group to improve running techniques.

The day was thoroughly enjoyable. Plenty of good food, fabulous soccer and a real opportunity for our juniors to develop their skills. Parents and community members interested in soccer were encouraged to stay and observe the sessions.

Day Two:

As predicted, this was even bigger than day one. It started with the Group Fitness session for adults. Mr Bugeja put a team of ladies through their paces, pushing the group a little further than they would do on their own. It was a session of fun and fitness combining cardio and strength training.

After a breakfast the juniors took to the field at 10am to work on their technical skills. A variety of activities and drills were undertaken, where improvement in skills were obvious from the beginning of the drill to the end.

This weekend was a genuine development opportunity for our junior soccer players and a big thank to Chad Bugeja for taking time from his busy schedule to share his football knowledge and love of the game with the future of Broken Hill soccer.
