Medium-pace bowler Samantha Betts has joined the Adelaide Strikers in the first season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

Broken Hill lass Samantha and fellow signing Tahlia McGrath will further strengthen a bowling line-up that already boasts Australian stars Megan Schutt and Sarah Coyte, as well as New Zealand fast-bowler Sophie Devine.

“We are thrilled to have signed two tremendously talented young cricketers in Sam and Tahlia and we expect them to play pivotal roles in the Strikers’ inaugural WBBL campaign,” said Adelaide Strikers General Manager, Bronwyn Klei.

Still just 19 years old, Betts has already played 19 Twenty20 fixtures in the former WNCL and will debut in the historic first game for the Adelaide Strikers this weekend.

Her debut in this third generation of the game (T20 cricket) was back on December 21, 2012, at the age of 16, playing for SA against NSW.

Two days later she played in the initial game on Adelaide Oval and collected her first wicket in this form of the code, having Blues bat/keeper Claire Koski caught at mid-on by Beth Morgan.

Betts’ coach Andrew McCauley said she will be a strong part of the competitive combination.

“It will be a quick turn-around to this form of the game after our WNCL win,” McCauley told the BDT.

“It is an exciting time to be around the women’s game in South Australia.

“On the back of our win over NSW to clinch the 50-over crown, this will give us momentum for the initial WBBL|01.

“Our batting stocks are good and run deep, while we have a strong array of bowling talent, both from a spin and pace perspective.

“Sam will play a significant role for our team and is one of the young guns of the Strikers outfit.

“Her primary role will be with the ball, but as she has proved this season, she can also come to the batting crease and hit.

“Lauren Ebsary and the returning Shelley Nitschke give us a lot of experience and know how.”

The Adelaide Strikers begin their rebel WBBL|01 campaign on Saturday against the Hobart Hurricanes at Aurora Stadium, Launceston.

Adelaide Strikers WBBL squad: Samantha Betts, Sarah Coyte, Sophie Devine, Lauren Ebsary, Stacy-Ann King, Tahlia McGrath, Tegan McPharlin, Shelley Nitschke, Bridget Patterson, Hannah Perry, Alex Price, Megan Schutt, Sarah Taylor, Amanda Wellington.
