New Year to ring in changes at BIU Band
Tuesday, 8th December, 2015
The Barrier Industrial Unions Band is busy ramping up for the Christmas season, which is traditionally its busiest time of year.
The Band played at the Ulysses Toy Run and the Christmas Pageant last weekend and will be playing at Westside Plaza on Thursday this week and next from 6pm to 7pm, and this Saturday and next, 10-11am.
The more agile members of the BIU Band marched in the Christmas Pageant despite, it being very hot, and won the Best Sound award.
The New Year will bring big changes for the band, as two influential members of the executive committee, Pauline Rauert and Ross Mawby, will be retiring.
Pauline is moving to Mildura to be near her family. Although she doesn’t play a brass instrument, she has been a part of the band on and off for 52 years, since her children joined the junior band in the late 60s.
Pauline has held nearly every position, including most recently President and Conductor. She is the only female President the BIU Band has had to date.
She has also been involved with the Broken Hill Civic Orchestra and the BIU Band/Soccer 355 Committee. On the 355 Committee she held the position of Secretary/Treasurer for 20 years.
Her effort, enthusiasm and organisational skills will be greatly missed.
The Band is also bidding farewell to Ross Mawby who has been Secretary/Treasurer for 24 years. However, Ross will continue on as a playing member.
Kyla Vine will replace Pauline as Conductor. Kyla has previously conducted and played with the band and the band welcomes her back.
