The launch of non-slip socks at the local hospital yesterday has already proved popular with almost 40 pairs sold by lunch time.

The ‘Ruby Red Socks’ are available at the Hospital Kiosk for $4 a pair as part of a falls prevention program.

Nurse Jane Cain said the socks reduced hospital patients’ risk of sustaining a serious injury.

“Non-slip socks are to be offered as an alternative if a patient does not or cannot wear safe footwear, especially for high fall risks and confused older patients,” she said.

“The socks are a bright, visual warning to staff and visitors that the patient is at risk of falling.”

It has been estimated that one third of people over 65 years and half of people over 80 years suffer at least one fall per year.
