A local trots trainer received an early Christmas present last week with a new foal joining her stable.
Ashleigh Camilleri was delighted to see her former pacer Carbohydrate give birth to a promising future trotter in “Billy”.
“It’s pretty exciting,” she said.
“I used to race Carbohydrate in the trots and stuff, it’s pretty good that I used to do everything with her and now she’s had a baby.
“Hopefully he can be a little bit of a superstar; his mum wasn’t really much chop!
Billy was born on December 20, however, he may not be the youngest of the racing team for long with another one of Ashleigh’s horses set to give birth any day.
For now though, Billy is the star of the stable and looks set to become a trotter in the future, all he needs now is his racing name.
“Billy is his stable name,” Ashleigh explained.
“Dad and I will get some names together in a few months, seeing his mother is called Carbohydrate, personally, I’d like to call him Rehydrate, to keep it in the family.
“We might mix and match with his father and mother and see what we come up with.
“It’s a learning curve for him now, so hopefully he’ll come good.
“Once he’s broken in, we’ll start training him and going into run arounds and then trials and then he’ll be fine to start racing, but that’s a few years down the track.”
Billy’s arrival to the stable has made Ashleigh even more excited for tonight’s opening race meeting for the 2016 Broken Hill Harness Racing season.
She said that having a runner in her mother’s memorial race makes the night all the more special.
“We’ve got a few runners on Saturday night, which will be really good,”
“We’ve got my mother’s memorial race as well so hopefully our horse (Cityscape) will go pretty good in that.
“It’ll be a special night.”
