Broken Hill Softball is gearing up to send its team down to this year’s Softball SA Senior State Championships in Adelaide.

For the second year running, the Broken Hill Men’s squad will travel down to West Beach to take on some of the state’s best softball teams at the end of the month.

Team Coach Lesley Nicholls said she was excited to see the team back for another go around.

“I think the guys are really hungry this time,” she said.

“They had a good look last year, I think they’re ready.

“We’ve got a few players that couldn’t attend last year that are coming this year and we’ve got a couple of new players on board which brings strength to the team.

“They’re really excited; they guys who went away last year pretty much know what they’re in for, the new players will probably be a little nervous.”

Over the past weeks, in the lead up to the Championships, the side has been training tirelessly to prepare for the games they’ll be playing.

Coach Nicholls explained that the side has been using the Norm Fox Oval to practise diamond work and fielding plays but has also been using the ICA to work on close skills.

Training indoors has allowed the side to work on pitching and catching as well as short-range fielding and developing quicker reflexes off the arena’s hard surface.

“The guys are working flat out, training twice a week,” she said.

“They’re putting in a lot harder at training this year, I did say I was going to up the ante this year to see how they go and I think they have adapted well.

“It’s bringing out more skills that they think they don’t have but they do.”

Coach Nicholls said the team was fundraising to help them attend the championships and buy new equipment.

Funds raised will also help next year’s teams with expenses.

The players have donated toward their fundraiser with a big prize now up for grabs, they call it “The Australia Day Pack”.

The pack includes a 28L Igloo esky, a $50 meat voucher, an espresso coffee Machine, bottles of bourbon, vodka, whiskey and wine, a carton of Toohey’s Extra Dry, assorted Australia Day merchandise and more.

Also in the pack are 12-can packs of Kirks Pasito and Creaming Soda, it doesn’t get any more Australian than that.

Tickets are only $5 and can be bought by inboxing any member of the side or through the Broken Hill Softball Facebook page.

The side will also be doing a pub crawl on Friday night so if you see them around, be sure to buy a ticket, the prize will be drawn on January 25.

Broken Hill looks set to have a red hot crack at this year’s championships and as well as welcoming some new players, the side will also gain new support from behind the scenes.

Helping Coach Nicholls will be new assistant coach Don Peters whose wife Kathy will be the team scorer.

Taryn Mitchell and Paula Huxtable will be the team managers for the trip.

Coach Nicholls said that was disappointing not to have a women’s team, but she is adamant about getting one up for 2017.

For now though, her focus is on the men’s side and she said she’s confident the team will match it with the best of them.

“I think the guys want it this year,” she said.

“All of them come from different sports backgrounds, with that they come with a lot of respect, lots of team effort, motivation, learning to talk each other up, knowing when your teammates are down and lifting them back up, I think we’ve got that in the team, we’ve got a good mix that can really back each other up.

“I can see their potential.

“If they get a bit more faith in themselves, once they get it, they’re going to smash them.”
