The Zinc Bowling Club’s Kate Smith has once again been selected to represent South Australia in the fine art of lawn bowls.

Smith (24) was named Skipper of one of the three Women’s sides to take on Victoria in the SA v VIC series at Marion Bowling Club in mid-February.

This is the third time in as many years Smith has been selected and her first as Skipper, having previously played number three.

She said it was a relief when the sides were finally named.

“I was nervous. I thought the team was going to be announced in December but it wasn’t until now when it did finally come out. I was waiting a fair while!

“They (the State Selection Panel) weren’t sure who they were going to pick for some players so they were just holding off for another selection practice so they could finalise it.”

Since October, Smith has been training vigorously with various drills as well as travelling down to Adelaide once a month for selection practice.

“The distance is a barrier, my training up here. Sometimes it’s a little bit different because the conditions are different but it makes it easier when I go back down to Adelaide.

“I’ve got my own program that I’m working with now because I know what my weaknesses are and what I need to work on.

“I’m working on my consistency at the moment because with my other commitments to other things, I haven’t been out on the on the green as much as I should have.

“So I’m just making sure that my delivery is all good and I feel comfortable with it. It’s really just about confidence.”

In her first year as skipper, Smith will join Jackie Gardiner (Kensington), Vicki Lehmann (Cowell) and Chris Thulborn (Marion) in a strong side.

“I had to really work to get into the team,” Smith said.

“I’ve had some really supportive people here and back in Adelaide who have helped me and kept me going.

“A big thanks to Zinc Bowling Club, they’ve been so welcoming and accepting.

“Their support has been great.”
