Prepare for big power outage
Thursday, 10th March, 2016
Towns and stations in the Broken Hill district will be without electricity for five hours on Wednesday next week while maintenance and testing of the electricity network takes place.
The work will include maintenance on the main powerline between Broken Hill and Menindee, which supplies power to the wider area, as well as maintenance and testing of high voltage equipment at the Broken Hill, Mt Gipps, Sunset Strip, Menindee and Wilcannia zone substations, according to Essential Energy.
The outage will affect all households and businesses in Menindee, Sunset Strip, Wilcannia, Tibooburra, White Cliffs, Stephens Creek and surrounding areas.
Regional Manger, Mark Summers, said that to allow its crews to do the work safely, the power will be out between 9am and 2pm.
The scheduled works will depend on the weather and may be postponed if the conditions are unfavourable or unforeseen circumstances arise, said Mr Summers.
“We appreciate that planned power outages can be inconvenient which is why we are completing several projects on this day,” he said.
“A planned power outage under controlled conditions for network maintenance is always preferable to equipment failing and potentially causing lengthier disruptions to customers.”
Broken Hill crews will do the maintenance on the main powerline while specialised crews from Dubbo will undertake the zone substation work.
