A steady stream of locals with pockets full of silver descended upon a blue tent in the Town Square yesterday.

It belonged to the Royal Australian Mint which was in the city for one day as part of its “Changeover Tour” to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of decimal currency.

Communications and promotions manager, Elyse Moore, said the mint’s staff had been kept busy through the day with locals trading in their coins for special commemorative versions and taking advantage of limited release products such as the special counterstamp coin.

The tour will leave the city today bound for its next stop, Griffith.
