It’s been around since the 1990s, but its first appearance at a local gym received a huge response and pulled more than 100 participants.
Zumba - the fitness program created by Colombian dancer Alberto “Power Pedal” Perz - had its first outing at Impact Gym in Oxide Street on Monday evening.
“We were overwhelmed with excitement and extremely pleased with the turn out,” said the gym’s Harley Cannard.
“We’d like to thank everyone for showing their support.”
Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to pulsating music. The choreography incorporates hip-hop, samba, salsa and mambo, as well as squats and lunges.
“Zumba isn’t just for fitness people, it’s for everyone,” Harley said.
“It’s a party-like atmosphere and participants forget they are exercising.
“And it’s not just about working out, it’s about creating a culture of family and a network within Impact Gym.”
He said there were many new faces at the gym for the event, including children.
The trainers are Cindy Knott, Sarah Rolton and Chantelle Grundy.
