The Alma Hotel is getting some life back into its walls as South Broken Hill’s newest resident Scott Smith renovates the old pub, with intentions to feature a new restaurant.

Mr Smith runs the business Out of the Ordinary Outback, centred on tourism across the Far West region.

He purchased the Alma Hotel because he needed a restaurant for his tour groups and noticed the lack of convenient dining options for residents out South.

“We looked at this place and said it’s a good opportunity to do food, there’s 5000 population out the south, and nowhere really to go out for dinner.”

The renovations will accommodate locals and tourists with a sports bar and family dining room, with a grassed area and beer garden to be addressed in the near future.

Mr Smith will expand the pub further outside with the veranda getting replaced in the next two to three weeks.

“We’re going to apply to council to see if we can dine on the footpath.”

Mr Smith said from his very short time here, he sees businesses moving out and closing down rather than actually coming back into the South.

However, he feels very positive about the local area supporting the Alma.

“I think there’s enough population to support businesses coming in rather than moving out.”
