Hannah's the Lions' Youth of the Year
Wednesday, 3rd March, 2010
Hannah Licul is this year's Broken Hill Lions Club Youth of the Year.
The Year 11 Broken Hill High School student was one of four contestants who entered the competition which aims to promote leadership in young people. Students are judged on their academic achievements as well as their leadership qualities and participation in events and community involvement.
Last week a judging panel assessed each students' personality and general knowledge before asking them a series of questions about topical issues. The contestants were asked about the management of the Murray-Darling River, the federal government's insulation scheme and the media's influence on sporting personalities.
Students then had to present two impromptu speeches - on the topics of raising the drinking age to 21 and the legal driving age to 18 - as well as a prepared speech of five minutes on a topic of their choice. Hannah was judged overall winner on the night while Willyama High School student Raynor Hicks won the public speaking category.
The other two contestants were BHHS student Elliot Mallon and Caitlin Jinks from Willyama. Lions spokeswoman Nikki Cox said that the three judges were impressed by the quality of the contestants. Hannah, an army cadet, will travel to Mildura later this month to contest the next round of the national competition.
