Workshop in need of a lifeline
Friday, 5th March, 2010
When it rains, it pours - especially for people living in Mercury Street.
It's a part of the city that's long been prone to flooding, so much so that back in December 2008 City ouncil reshaped the road to try and stop the water running into people's homes. George Camilleri of the Lifeline Workshop said yesterday - while he stood in ankle-deep water - that it didn't work.
Council has since reviewed the situation and is constructing a stormwater detention basin to capture the water. Mr Camilleri closed shop early yesterday because customers couldn't get in the gate due to six-inch-deep water. He said it flooded right in from the street. "We're trying to pump it out but we can't keep up. I think we're going to need a bigger pump," he said.
"This never happened before Council fixed the road."
