Businesses help pull off massive project

The city's basketball courts now boast a world-class surface thanks to the generosity of local businesses.
All three courts at the Sanderson Stadium have been resurfaced to International Basketball Federation (FIBA) standards at a cost of around $20,000.
City farewells top trio

This Sunday will see the conclusion of local basketball for 2012, with Grand Final Day to be held at the R. K. Sanderson Stadium complex.
While there will be the usual array of emotions as teams experience the joy of victory and the grief of defeat; there will be some sadness for everyone, as Sam, Jasmine and Lachlan Simmons play their final games of Basketball in the city.

The Broken Hill Basketball Association (BHBA) continues to produce top level athletes, with two players selected in State squads.
Under 16 players Sam Simmons and Abi Beck have impressed State selectors in recent combined games and trainings, with Sam selected in the final boys SA Country squad and Abi selected as reserve.
Both players have been travelling to SA for the past few months for intensive training camps at Murray Bridge, and BHBA President Grahame Semmens said their selection was well deserved.
“Broken Hill Basketball is extremely proud of both players and would like to congratulate both players for their selections,” he said.
Junior refs take charge

Broken Hill’s basketballers weren’t the only ones to impress at the recent SA Junior Country Championships - referees Andrew Donnelly and Connor McLaren also attracted plenty of praise.
The youngsters were joined by fellow referee Mark Harris, all of whom are part of the BH Basketball Association’s (BHBA) junior referee development program.
BHBA vice president, Keven Donnelly, said he had heard nothing but “glowing reports” about the boys’ performances and said they gained valuable exprience at the carnival.
Broncos thrive under pressure

The Broncos under 14 girls have battled through two heart-stopping finals to clinch the SA Country Basketball Championships in Adelaide.
After winning the semi-final by a solitary point, the Broken Hill girls made a slow start in the grand final against Great Southern and trailed by 12 points at half time.
After a “motivational spray” from coach Anthony Harman, the girls responded to narrow the deficit to three points at three-quarter time.
