Major network upgrade underway Essential Energy crews have begun work on a major upgrade to the electricity network in Galena Street.

Regional general manager Far West, Guy Chick, said the upgrade formed a part of a major works program which will benefit all electricity customers in Broken Hill.

The Productivity Commission, in a report released yesterday, called for the overhaul of the regulation and ownership of the electricity networks.

Nationals MP John Williams has hit back at Prime Minister Julia Gillard after her threat to take action against state governments over their involvement in soaring power bills.

The member for Murray- Darling responded to Ms Gillard's attack on the states for their apparent role in the exorbitant power prices.

She singled out the NSW Government as the main culprit.

Low income earners, pensioners and City Council are expected to be among the hardest hit by a 19.7 per cent electricity price hike - the third double digit increase in as many years.

The rise, which will come into effect on July 1, was announced yesterday by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).
