With the help of the Broken Hill Golf Club, the AFL Broken Hill board has been able to start maintenance work on the Jubilee Oval.

AFL BH Chairman Peter Nash said it was a great example of community engagement with the golf club loaning its aerator and tractor to AFL BH.

Mr Nash said it was good to see sporting bodies working together and he hoped that AFL BH could repay the favour.

South's preseason campaign is only two weeks old, but new coach Peter Johns already knows exactly what he wants from his players.

Johns is looking to assemble a list of dedicated and selfless players who will put the needs of the team first.

After the bitter disappointment of last year's grand final defeat against North, the "team first" approach appears a good strategy to help the Roos galvanise and rebound in 2013.

For the city's aspiring junior footballers, the road to State team selection is longer than most.

The four-week selection process for the New South Wales under 16 and under 18 squads gets underway this weekend, with locals facing thousands of kilometres in travel just to take part.

Players will travel to Narrandera for the first round of the Zone Championships, then have a weekend off before making back to back weekend trips to Canberra for subsequent rounds.

The Central Football Club is hoping the appointment of a new coaching coordinator will help spearhead a rise up the ladder in 2013.

The club has signed up former South under 18 and B grade coach Anthony Elliott for the role for next season.

Elliott had applied for the South A grade coaching position, which was won by Peter Johns.
