The first training run has been held for Broken Hill's combined side of female footballers who will play Port Lincoln in an AFL curtain raiser next month.

Broken Hill will take on the South Australians at AAMI Stadium in a 50 minute match ahead of the Adelaide Crows' Round 19 game
against Essendon.

AFL Broken Hill chairman, Peter Nash, said the first training on Tuesday was "excellent" with about 25 women turning up to try out for
the squad.

West have consolidated their position in the finals frame with a 26 point win over Central at Memorial Oval on Saturday.

The 8.10 (58) to 5.2 (32) victory means that West have opened up a one game gap on last placed Central, as the sides approach the home straight of the season.

Local junior footballers, Lachlan Tiziani and Trent Barraclough, have been selected to play in the Under 15 NSW state team.

The boys will line up for their State at the Under 15 National Carnival being held in Adelaide late next month.

Their selection came about following their participation in the NSW Under 15 AFL carnival held in Wollongong in May which doubles as the trials for State team selection.

West ruckman Matt Nelson will this weekend pull on the boots for his 100th game, notching up another milestone in a career that has so far spanned two club best and fairest awards and Broken Hill representative honours.

Matt says he is looking forward to what is a big weekend for himself and the West Football Club.

"It's pretty exciting, playing my hundredth game, plus we've got the old timer's on this weekend so it's going to be a big weekend," he said.

South have further narrowed the gap on ladder leaders North, following a 36 point victory over West at Alma Oval on Saturday.

The 10.14 (74) to 5.8 (38) victory handed South their fifth win of the season, drawing level with North, who still occupy top spot because of their superior percentage.
